| Cold front heading toward Sioux City |
|
SIOUX CITY -- A bitter cold front will come blasting into Siouxland tonight, forecasters say, bringing winds and the potential for severe wind chill factors. National Weather Service meteorologist Philip Schumacher said light the temperature should be around freezing for most of the Sioux City area today with about a quarter-inch of heavy, wet snow. However, he expected a cold front to move in after midnight tonight. Monday won't be pretty, but it will be cold. The high temperature will probably be around 10 degrees in the morning, Schumacher said, flatlining or falling the rest of the day. By mid-afternoon, the temperature will likely be zero to five degrees with wind chills approaching minus 20 degrees. Forecasters expect 20 mph winds, gusting to 30-35, could reduce viability to less than a half mile in open areas. It won't be as bad as the last blizzard, Schumacher said, because much of the snow from Sunday will have melted. "Fortunately, we won't have 4-5 inches of snow to blow around, which would be more of a concern," he said. As unpleasant as that might be, it seems Siouxland residents may finally be on the good side of the storm. There will be somewhat more snow eastern Siouxland, but Schumacher said areas near Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Mason City, Iowa, have the potential to receive more than six inches of snow. |
