Snow, whiteout conditions expected Monday - Sioux City

SIOUX CITY -- Blistering northerly breezes and another blast of snow are in Monday's forecast for Siouxland, said National Weather Service meteorologist Kyle Weisser.

The snow system, which began tonight, will continue off and on today producing an additional 2 - 3 inches of white stuff before ending later in the day.

But Weisser said it's not the new snowfall that will be causing problems. Instead, he said it will be the blustery winds that may create whiteout conditions.

"North/northwest winds, between 15 to 25 mph, may gust as high as 31 mph," he said. "Blowing snow may become a problem, especially in open areas."

Wind gusts will also send temperatures plummeting today, before bottoming out to 8 degrees Monday night, with below zero wind chills predicted..

This is why Siouxland will be under a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m., Tuesday.

According to Weisser, Siouxland may actually be on the good side of the storm as areas like Spencer, Iowa, Mason City, Iowa and Marshall, Minn. are expecting snow total to exceed six inches from this latest storm.

Tuesday's 30 percent chance of snow will be the last blast of precipitation as the forecast calls for partly and mostly sunny skies until Friday.
