Lake Delhi Eyewitness: ‘Anything and Everything Was Going Through’

Fred DeShaw, 52, of Worthington, said he was only about 150 feet away when the earth gave way at Lake Delhi. He estimated a swath about 125 feet wide and 30 feet deep opened up before his eyes as a “roar” of water went through.

“Anything and everything was going through,” DeShaw said.

DeShaw said he watched the ground erode and tear down several utility poles. Propane tanks were spinning and hissing in the churning water near the breach. Every once in a while, one would explode, he said.

“You could feel the heat from it,” DeShaw said. “It was a big ball of fire.”

DeShaw watched at least one pontoon boat come through.

“Just to see that force of the water,” DeShaw said. “Once it went, it went really fast.”

About three hours after the dam was compromised, DeShaw said the water had smoothed out.

Later in the afternoon, he was in Hopkinton to see the effects of the dam failure.
